Australia's Peter Bol has backed up his inspiring performance at the Tokyo Olympics, winning the men's 800 metres at a track and field meet in Poland overnight.
Bol captured the imagination of the Australian public when he finished fourth in the men's 800m final in Tokyo.
Less than a fortnight later, he triumphed at the Memoriał Wiesława Maniaka in Szczecin with a time of 1 minute and 45.49 seconds.
Poland's Patryk Dobek, who pipped Bol for the bronze medal in Tokyo, placed eighth in a time of 1:47.24.
"Decided to stay hungry post Tokyo," Bol tweeted following his victory in Szczecin.
Bol become the first Australian to reach the Olympic men's 800m final in 53 years when he qualified for the medal race in Tokyo.
He was outstanding in the preliminary rounds, setting national records in both his heat (1:44.13) and semi-final (1:44.11).
He produced a courageous display in the final, running a time of 1:45.92 to finish behind Kenya's gold and silver medallists Emmanuel Korir (1:45.06) and Ferguson Rotich (1.45.23), and Dobek (1:45.39).
Prior to Bol's efforts in Tokyo, Ralph Doubell was the last Australian to qualify for the men's 800m at an Olympics.
Doubell won gold at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, equalling the then-world record of 1:44.40.
The time remained the Australian record until it was broken by Bol's training partner Joseph Deng (1:44.21) in 2018.
