Australia's 'egg boy' cautioned and senator cleared as police say he acted in self-defence

A teenage boy who went viral for egging an Australian senator will not be charged, police have said.

Will Connolly, 17, has instead been issued an official caution by Victoria state police.

Officials also concluded that Senator Fraser Anning had acted in self-defence when he twice struck the teenager afterwards.

The teenager gained fame as "Egg Boy" for smashing an egg on Mr Anning's head in Melbourne last month.

The incident came after the senator controversially blamed the New Zealand mosque massacre on Muslim immigration.

Mr Anning's colleagues in Australia's Parliament passed a censure motion against him last week, saying his statements blaming the victims were ugly and dangerous.

The teenager earlier said his move to egg Mr Anning “united people” following the mosque attacks in Christchurch.

"This egg has united people and money has been raised, tens of thousands of dollars has been raised for those victims," Mr Connolly said.

"It's going to help people affected by the tragedy in Christchurch, every cent."

He maintained the stunt was intended to be a “few laughs with mates” and did not expect the Senator to react to the egging.

Mr Anning appeared to hit the teenager twice after he was egged and his supporters then restrained Mr Connolly on the ground.
