Australian doctor Elena Galiabovitch, who helped raise the Olympic flag at the opening ceremony in Tokyo, has fallen eight points short of qualifying for the women's 10-metre air pistol final.
Galiabovitch finished 27th with a score of 569, having been in the mix to make the eight-shooter final after a strong start in which she scored 289 out of a possible 300 across the opening three series.
Similar numbers in the second half of qualification would have delivered a spot in the gold-medal shootout, held later on Sunday, but a final round of 90 meant she slipped down the leaderboard.
Dina Aspandiyarova, Australia's other shooter in the field, ranked 46th with a score of 558.
Aspandiyarova finished sixth in the corresponding event at Sydney 2000 while representing country of birth Kazakhstan.
Six Olympians from around the world, who were all frontline medical workers, performed Friday night's ceremonial duty.
Galiabovitch, selected as Oceania's representative, is studying to become a urological surgeon but spent last year working as a locum doctor to help Melbourne battle COVID-19.
Galiabovitch will also take part in Thursday's 25m pistol event.
