Australia's Ange Postecoglou appointed as new Celtic manager in Scottish Premiership

Former Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has been confirmed as Celtic's new manager in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic said Postecoglou had "successfully achieved" UEFA recognition of his Football Australia coaching pro-licence, which had previously been cited as a reason for the delay in his appointment.

He replaces Neil Lennon, who resigned from the position in February.

Postecoglou joins Celtic from Japan's Yokohama F Marinos, whom he coached to the J-League title in 2019.

He previously led the Socceroos to victory in the 2015 Asian Cup and won A-League and NSL championships with Brisbane Roar and South Melbourne respectively.

"The opportunity that has been given to me is one of the greatest honours in football and the responsibility to lead our magnificent football club into the future is one that I will cherish dearly," Postecoglou said in a Celtic statement.

"Celtic is one of the names in world football, of that there is no doubt — a giant of a club, a proper footballing institution and so much more — real history, real substance, real authenticity and real soul.

"I know Celtic is a true way of life for so many people and I know the demands which come with this position — I am ready to do all I can to meet those demands.

"We want to entertain our fans and we want to win. These are the objectives which I always set myself and which I now begin work on."

Celtic said Postecoglou would begin working immediately and would arrive in Glasgow "as soon as current protocols allow".

The club had won nine consecutive premierships before relinquishing the title to arch rival Rangers this season.

Aside from winning the Asian Cup with the Socceroos, Postecoglou coached the national men's side at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

He stepped away from the role in 2017 after the Socceroos clinched qualification for the World Cup held in Russia the following year.
