Australia Post van stolen in inner Melbourne, packages missing

Australia Post is asking everyone to keep an eye out for "the safety of their local postie and driver".

If you have been waiting for weeks for a delivery in the leafy inner-Melbourne suburb of Prahran, your goods may have been stolen.

Australia Post confirmed one of its vans, along with 67 packages on board, was stolen in the suburb in August.

Victoria Police said the driver was threatened by a man with a knife in Greville Street at about 1:15pm on August 24.

Police said the van was located about one hour later in Albion Street but most of the goods on board were missing.

An Australia Post spokesperson said the stolen van was a StarTrack vehicle but he could not confirm if it was marked as such.

The spokesperson said he understood the driver of the stolen van was OK.

"To any impacted customers waiting for their parcels, we ask for patience, and [say] that we will be in contact where possible.

"[We] assure them that we're doing our best under difficult circumstances, and ask everyone else to keep an eye out for the safety of their local postie and driver."

Victoria Police said the investigation was ongoing.

One customer, Rhiannon, told the ABC it took two frustrating weeks for Australia Post to let her know her package had been stolen.

She said the postal agency ultimately advised her that her parcel was "affected by a vehicle theft while a driver was out delivering parcels ... that means that we now consider your item to be lost in transit".

Rhiannon said while her goods were not anything technically "essential", she wondered how many others had been affected.

"Who knows how many other people are missing items that were supposed to be delivered that day and don't know what happened," she said.
