Australia Open: Sindhu, 2 others in quarterfinals

PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth and Priyanshu Rajawat moved into the quarterfinals of the Australia Open BWF Super-500 tournament in Sydney on Thursday.

However, the Indian challenge ended in doubles as Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand suffered a 10-21, 20-22 loss to Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara of Japan.

Mithun Manjunath went down fighting against former All England champion Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia 13-21, 21-12, 19-21 and Kiran George lost 15-21, 18 21 to top seed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

Indian presence in the semifinals is assured as Srikanth faces fast-rising Priyanshu in quarters. Srikanth drubbed Su Li Yang of Chinese Taipei 19-21, 21-19, 21-13. World No.31 Priyanshu downed world No.28 Wang Tzu of Chinese Taipei 21-18, 13-21, 21-19.

This would be the first meeting between Srikanth and his training partner on international stage. World No.9 HS Prannoy struggled past Chi Yu Jen of Chinese Taipei 19-21, 21-19, 21-13. Prannoy will face top seed Ginting in the quarterfinals. Prannoy downed Ginting twice in four meetings.
