Australia-New Zealand make highest aggregate of runs in a World Cup match

NEW DELHI: History was made during the ICC World Cup match between Australia and New Zealand at Dharamsala on Saturday as it witnessed the largest aggregate of runs in a WC match.

Australia set a formidable total of 388 runs. In response, New Zealand reached 383/9 in their 50 overs. The combined total of 771 runs stands as the highest aggregate in a World Cup match, surpassing the previous record of 754 runs set in a match between South Africa and Sri Lanka at New Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium on October 7.

The match in Dharamsala witnessed a total of 97 boundaries, the second-highest in a World Cup match. Australia contributed with 32 fours and 20 sixes, while New Zealand hit 33 fours and 12 sixes. The highest-ever aggregate of boundaries in a World Cup match was seen in the South Africa-Sri Lanka match in this tournament.

The match between Australia and New Zealand also saw 32 sixes, with Australia hitting 20 and New Zealand hitting 12, marking the second-highest number of sixes in a World Cup match, following a match between England and Afghanistan in 2019.

Australia's innings was powered by a strong 175-run opening stand between Travis Head (109 in 67 balls) and David Warner, along with notable contributions from Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis, and skipper Pat Cummins.

In New Zealand's chase, partnerships between Devon Conway and Will Young, as well as Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra, laid a solid foundation. Despite valiant efforts from James Neesham, New Zealand fell short by just five runs.

Travis Head was awarded the 'Player of the Match' for his remarkable century. Australia holds the fourth spot with four wins and two losses, earning a total of eight points. Meanwhile, New Zealand holds the third spot with an equal win-loss record and points but with a superior net run rate.
