Glenn Maxwell is back in the Australian squad to face India in a one-day international series next month after recovering from a horror leg injury.

Maxwell incurred the injury in an accident at a friend's 50th birthday party last November. He missed most of the home summer of cricket as a result.

He played games in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition and the Sheffield Shield last week as he regained match fitness.

Mitchell Marsh has recovered from an ankle injury and is also included in the 16-player squad, while paceman Jhye Richardson has recovered from a hamstring injury to be included in the tour.

David Warner — who has returned to Australia after fracturing his elbow in the second Test in Delhi — is among those named for the ODI series.

Australian chair of selectors, George Bailey, said in a statement: "With the World Cup just over seven months away, these matches in India are an important step in our preparation.

"Glenn, Mitchell and Jhye are all important players in what we think the squad might look like come October."

Australian paceman Josh Hazlewood — who returned home from India after failing to overcome an Achilles injury — has not been named in the squad.

Hazlewood sustained the injury in the third Test against South Africa in Sydney in January.

"It would be great for Josh to be part of this series, but we have taken a conservative view ahead of a very important winter in England, of which he will be an integral part," Bailey said.

Australian squad:

Pat Cummins (C), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Jhye Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner,  Adam Zampa
