Australia great breaks silence on England Test coach links

  • Justin Langer, the former Australia coach, has indicated a potential interest in the vacant England Test coach position, despite telling the Stick to Cricket podcast that he has not yet been formally approached for the role.
  • Currently coaching the Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred, Langer acknowledged the prestige of the England coaching job, ranking it among the top three global cricket coaching roles.
  • His comments follow the recent dismissal of Brendon McCullum as Test coach and come after early favourite Andy Flower ruled himself out of contention for the position.
  • Langer, who played over 100 Test matches and coached Australia for four years, believes a collaborative partnership with McCullum, who remains England's limited-overs coach, could be effective if the right individuals are involved.
  • Separately, Australia coach Andrew McDonald suggested Ben Stokes might make a dramatic return for next year’s Ashes series, a prospect Langer also weighed in on, hoping from an Australian perspective that the "warrior" does not reverse his retirement decision.
