Pat Cummins has elected to field against England after winning the toss in his first match in charge of Australia's ODI team.

The star quick has stepped into Australia's 50-over captaincy void left by veteran opener Aaron Finch's one-day retirement last month.

Cummins sent England, the reigning ODI and T20 World Cup champions, in to bat at Adelaide Oval on Thursday in the first of the three-match series.

Australia have recalled fast bowler Mitchell Starc after his surprising omission for their final T20 World Cup game at the same venue.

However, fellow important paceman Josh Hazlewood has been left out with Australia preferring two spinners in Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar.

Test No.5 Travis Head will be David Warner's new partner at the top of the order, replacing Finch.

The game is taking place just four days after England's T20 World Cup final win against Pakistan at the MCG on Sunday night.

Captain Jos Buttler is just one of three players to back up from that decider along with opener Phil Salt and quick Chris Jordan.

"It's been a great few days but full focus and attention on this game," Buttler said.

"We only have 12 ODIs until the (50-over) World Cup (next year in India) so every game is vital."

The star of England's second T20 World Cup title, Ben Stokes, will not be playing in this series after the megastar's shock call in July to retire from ODIs.

AUSTRALIA: Travis Head, David Warner, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins (capt), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa

ENGLAND: Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Dawid Malan, James Vince, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler (capt), Liam Dawson, Chris Jordan, David Willey, Luke Wood, Olly Stone.
