Australia captain Michael Hooper slams Rhys Patchell's 'bad tackle technique' in tense exchange with referee

Australia captain Michael Hooper questioned referee Roman Poite's decision to award a penalty, criticising Rhys Patchell's tackle technique during a tense exchange during the Rugby World Cup match.

Patchell, who replaced Dan Biggar at No 10 in the first half after Biggar departed for a HIA, tackled Samu Kerevi front on after 36 minutes, but a penalty was awarded to Wales as Kerevi was judged to have led with his forearm.

After explaining the decision, Poite told Hooper: "This is the third penalty, we have had a penalty for high tackle, and offsides. Please make sure your players play in the law".

But rather than accept the decision and advice, Hooper stood his ground and took issue with the official.

Referee Romain Poite talks to Samu Kerevi of Australia after he charged into Rhys Patchell (Ben Evans/Huw Evans Agency)

"Should we not run into the tackle there?" he could be heard saying on the ref mic.

"That's just terrible tackle technique and you can't carry the ball if that's going to be the ruling."

The French referee responds: "This is my call.

"You can't touch the throat of the opponent.

"That's the end of the story. That's our decision."

Kerevi could then be seen apologising to Patchell afterwards, while the No 10 replacement then dusted himself off and nailed the kick.

Straight from the restart, Wales went on to score their second try via a Gareth Davies interception, taking Wales to 23-8 at the break.

This incident followed on from Hooper being at the centre of a charge on Dan Biggar after 18 minutes that went unpunished.
