Australia calls for answers after girl, 9, shot dead by police while on holiday in Pakistan

  • Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese has demanded a transparent investigation into the fatal shooting of nine-year-old Hania Ahmed in Pakistan .
  • Hania, an Australian girl visiting Pakistan with her family, was killed on 10 June when a local police official fired at their car during an armed robbery in Chakwal, Punjab province.
  • Her father, Adeel Ahmed, alleges police fired first, contradicting initial police claims and stating the tragedy could have been avoided if officers had not engaged the robbers in that manner.
  • Punjab Police later admitted the officer made an "erroneous decision" and mistakenly fired at the family's vehicle, leading to Hania's death and injuries to her father and brother.
  • The officer responsible has been arrested and suspended, with police promising a thorough and impartial investigation, while the two alleged thieves were subsequently killed in a separate police encounter.
