Australia brings in Hong Kong visa streams

Alex Hawke says the new visa streams for Hong Kong nationals will attract skills and talent. (AAP)

The Morrison government is bringing in two dedicated visa streams allowing people from Hong Kong to claim permanent residency in Australia.

They will open from March 5, 2022, for Hong Kong and British national overseas passport holders who have lived, worked or studied in Australia for the past three or four years.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke expects about 8800 existing temporary skilled, graduate and student visa holders will be eligible for these two new visas.

"These dedicated and simpler visa streams for Hong Kong nationals will attract skills and talent and build business links, helping to boost productivity and create further job opportunities for Australians," he said on Monday.

China's imposition of national security laws and crackdown of pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong has provoked global alarm.

A Senate estimates committee was last month told an Australian had been detained temporarily in Hong Kong.

Concerns were raised about the "systematic unravelling of democratic institutions" there.
