Australia blanketed in snow after huge blizzard amid avalanche warnings

Incredible pictures show huge areas in Australia coated in snow after a blizzard brought sub-zero tempertures.

New South Wales, Victoria, the Australia Capital Territory and the island state of Tasmania all experienced snowfall today.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology posted on Twitter : "We've seen light #snow make it to #Canberra today, and yes even heard a few rogue flakes landed on Parliament House."

The bureau said that more than one metre of snow had fallen in a number of alpine regions.

And there's more to come, forecasters say, with the cold weather likely to remain for several days.

Many may be delighted, but it's a headache for authorities, with warnings in places about avalanches.

Although June to August is winter temperatures rarely drop below 5 degrees Celsius.

Much of the area now covered in snow was affected by the huge bush fires in Australia last year.

Weather warnings have been put in place, amid fears of fresh blizzards and avalanches in New South Wales.

Brett Dutschke, of Weatherzone, told Daily Mail Australia that areas as low as 300m above sea level had been bombarded by snow.

He said: "This latest front has been the most intense, not just in how cold the air is but also wind speed, particularly in NSW and also shower intensity and snowfalls.

"By tomorrow morning we should see snow amount to more than 20cm in parts of the central tablelands."
