Australia 73-0 Samoa: Wallaroos lay down marker with record-breaking win in Rugby World Cup opener

The record kept on tumbling in Salford as Australia way down a marker in their first clash as the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

Samoa were put to the sword as the Walleroos scored 11 tries to run out 73-0 winners.

It is the most points Australian have scored in Womens’ World Cup match and the most tries, having previously scored 10 against South Africa in 2006.

The Walleroos were heavy favourites heading into the Manchester clash, but shutting out Samoa was not expected.

Hooker Katalina Amosa dotted down inside two minutes and Australia did not look back.

Young star Caitlyn Halse, 18, scored twice and Desiree Miller completed a first-half hat-trick.

But the main plaudits were player of the match Cecelia Smith who was a sturdy presence in midfield to keep Samoa at bay in the second half.

Australia are next in action on Saturday, August 30, taking on USA, after England face Samoa.
