Austin Rivers agrees to a two-year deal to return to Houston

The Houston Rockets didn’t make any big splashes in the first 24 hours of free agency, but the team has done some work to bring back a core that has been exceptional in the regular season, and only losing to the Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors for the last two seasons.

While there have been rumors around Chris Paul or Clint Capela getting moved or the team trying to bring in Jimmy Butler, the Rockets have to feel good about the team’s chances considering their only roadblock thus far is primed for a down year.

After signing Gerald Green and Danuel House on Day 1 of free agency, the Rockets have come to terms on a deal with Austin Rivers, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Rivers will have a player option in the second year, meaning he could become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2020. Rivers was waived by the Phoenix Suns after being traded from the Washington Wizards this past December and signed with the Rockets, playing 47 games with the team this year.

He good off the bench for the Rockets, often defending the opposing team’s best guard and providing some energy when either Chris Paul or James Harden went to the bench. The Rockets would love to see his shooting improve, but Rivers back on a one-and-one deal is a good look for Houston as they prepare for the 2019-20 season.
