Austin man charged with killing 1, wounding 2 others

Aug. 06--A man was being held without bail after being charged with fatally shooting a man and wounding two others on the West Side in June.

Demetrius Bronson, 26, is charged with first-degree murder and two felony counts of aggravated battery with a use of a deadly weapon, according to court records and the Cook County state's attorney's office.

Witnesses identified Bronson as the person who shot the three men around 6:20 p.m. on June 14 in the 900 block of North Lorel Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood, according to a court document.

Byron Floyd, 31, and the two other men, 31 and 36, had gone to North Lorel Avenue to talk to Bronson about "an incident" that occurred a few days before, according to a court document.

An argument started between Bronson and Floyd and the 36-year-old man. Bronson pulled out a gun and fired several rounds at Floyd and the 36-year-old, the court document said.

Floyd, of the 5500 block of West Cortland Street, was struck in the back and side and was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office.

The 36-year-old man was shot four times as he tried to run away, according to the court document. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said at the time.

The 31-year-old man was shot once in his right leg. He drove himself to West Suburban Medical Center, where he was treated and released, according to court documents and police.

Bronson, of the 900 block of North Lorel Avenue, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with great bodily harm and reckless discharge of a firearm in 2007, according to a court document. He was sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Bronson is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 25.
