Austin Corbett takes over first-team reps at right guard again

The ongoing saga of the camp battle to replace Kevin Zeitler has taken another turn. Austin Corbett took the first-team offensive reps at right guard on Thursday.

It’s the third time Corbett has been the starting right guard in camp. He continues to alternate in and out of that role with Eric Kush and Kyle Kalis as the Browns determine who is the best fit between center JC Tretter and right tackle Chris Hubbard. All three have had multiple days of working with the starting OL thus far.

Corbett is the presumptive front-runner on the basis of his draft status. He was the Browns’ second-round pick a year ago out of Nevada. Kush is a journeyman and Kalis has played sparingly in two NFL seasons. Yet Corbett has failed to seal the deal with his spotty play.

After practice, offensive coordinator Todd Monken refused to say anything definitive about Corbett or the competition in his press conference. He did acknowledge the obvious with a quip, however:

“To say that we don’t have an idea (who will start) is probably a little bit of a stretch.”
