Austin Butler fans fume as Elvis star is 'snubbed' by Oscars and walks away empty handed

Austin Butler had been tipped for major Oscars success for his role in the hit biopic Elvis – but his dream didn't materialise and he walked away empty-handed.

The 2022 biopic of Elvis Presley had been nominated for eight awards at the Hollywood event including Best Sound, Best Actor, Best Picture and Best Cinematography.

In recent months, the film has bagged several trophies including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and a People's Choice Award.

But following the Oscars on Sunday night, Austin's legion of fans have taken to social media to share their fury with some claiming the film and the 31-year-old star had been "snubbed" by the Academy.

"Holy s*** was Austin Butler snubbed big time," fumed one.

While a second went on to write: "ELVIS was snubbed by Oscar. A pathetic display of bias against a great man, Elvis Presley. Knew it was coming with a snub of Baz as director. Austin deserved it, as he worked his heart and soul out for 3 years. Fraser worked for 3 months. AUSTIN was the WINNER! Snub or not."

"I feel very sorry about the way Elvis (2022) was treated today. The incredible work about the costumes, scenery, photos, lights, montage, storyline and PERFORMANCES… Anyway, thank you Baz Luhrmann and the crew and Austin Butler, you'll always be our best actor," said another.

Meanwhile, a fourth commented: "@austinbutler you got screwed out of the Oscars, completely snubbed, don't let that get to you, they knew how good you were and the homage to Elvis you did, they never would have given one to him when he was alive, and even after his death, they had to snub you..."

"Elvis (2022) and Austin Butler were snubbed at the #Oscars. All the hard work put into this incredible film deserved to win tonight. Austin worked so hard & dedicated his life to Elvis. he was born to play this role & you can't say otherwise. Elvis was incarnated. thank you, Baz," added another.

Since the film hit the cinemas, Austin has received widespread praise for his portrayal which saw him completely transform into the Suspicious Minds hitmaker – including completely losing his own voice.

Austin believes that Elvis is now part of his "DNA" as he ended up in a "rabbit hole of obsession" while preparing for the film which saw him down melted ice cream in order to put on weight.

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, the former Nickelodeon star said: "I broke down his life into periods of time where I could hear the differences in how his voice changed over the years and how his movement changed over the years, and I spent two years studying, trying to find his humanity as best as I could through that."
