An Australian man is facing drugs and weapons charges in Papua New Guinea after police and customs officers raided his Port Moresby home and allegedly found guns, ammunition and a quantity of methamphetamine.
The home of Sean Anthony Honey, 31, was raided over the weekend in an operation "to ensure this sort of dangerous drug is not on our streets", Police Commissioner David Manning told PNG newspaper The National.
Honey is out on court bail facing six charges of possessing unlicensed firearms, ammunition and dangerous drugs.
The weapons found included a shotgun and a pistol, Manning said.
He said police were yet to verify the amount of methamphetamine seized but confirmed it was a "controlled delivery", meaning it was tracked across international borders.
"The shipment was allowed to come to PNG so as to allow police officers to search for and seize the contraband as well as bring into custody persons involved in receiving the contraband item in PNG.
"Upon entering the country, search warrants were applied for and granted, and surveillance conducted to document the delivery," Manning said,
Australian Federal Police have been contacted for comment on the case.
Manning told The National that PNG was becoming a "safe house" for the trafficking of drugs, guns and ammunition because of the lack of border protection.
"PNG is being used as a route for drug trafficking with illicit drugs being brought in, stored and then moved out by local suppliers."
