An Australian man has been locked up in Bali on a drug charge after police allege he was sent a parcel of cookies containing a narcotic known as DMT or fantasia.
David John Clarkson, 45, originally from Gosford in NSW, was arrested during a controlled delivery of a package addressed to him from Peru.
The Indonesian narcotics bureau, the BNN, alleges that the parcel contained almost 1kg of a paste which contained a narcotic substance called dimethyltryptamine or DMT.
DMT is a hallucinogenic, similar to LSD and magic mushrooms, and is often called fantasia or businessman's trip. It is derived from a South American plant.
It is classified as a type one narcotic in Indonesia and subject to the same drug laws as marijuana and heroin.
Mr Clarkson was arrested on January 22 in a joint customs and BNN operation after the drugs were allegedly detected in the parcel addressed to him.
BNN Bali official Putu Agus Arjaya told AAP the Australian had been declared a suspect and prosecutors were preparing his case for court where he will likely face a charge of drug possession which carries a maximum 12 years behind bars.
Mr Clarkson is currently in custody.
Putu said it was alleged the package of cookies, sent from Peru, contained more than 900 grams of a paste containing DMT.
He said it was consumed by dissolving it in water and that Mr Clarkson said he had found out about it from a local healer when he lived in Peru.
Putu said Mr Clarkson, who lived in Bali for the past two years, had told police he consumed the paste to ease pain in his stomach and thought it was legal in Indonesia.
"He said that he had a problem with his stomach, he said that he felt comfortable after consuming it," Putu said.
