Henry Hunt and Matthew Renshaw have both been dismissed after promising starts as Test aspirants missed their chance to press their claims in Australia A's tour match against England Lions in Brisbane.

Australia A reached 5-132 at tea on day one of their clash at Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane's north, just a short drive from the Gabba.

Openers Hunt (33) and Bryce Street (26) and No.3 Renshaw (38) were all out just as meaningful scores loomed, while Nic Maddinson (0) and Usman Khawaja (11) also missed out.

Twenty20 World Cup hero Mitch Marsh (17) and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis (one) were unbeaten at tea, with English spinner Dom Bess and quick Liam Norwell both taking two wickets.

Khawaja had been overlooked for the Gabba Test despite his great Sheffield Shield form, with Marcus Harris preferred to open and Travis Head selected to bat at No.5.

Harris made just three on Thursday though, while Head was yet to score at tea.
