Aussies Gilmore and Wright out of surf pro

Stephanie Gilmore and Tyler Wright are the two biggest casualties of the Boost Mobile Pro surfing competition at South Stradbroke Island, eliminated on day one.

The pair, who boast nine world titles between them, squared off in the final of the Tweed Coast Pro last month, with the tournaments part of the three-event Australian Grand Slam of Surfing.

The series is being held after the cancellation of the world surfing tour during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With 24 surfers across the men's and women's fields taking part, Gilmore and Wright were the biggest names in action but struggled to find their groove in heavy conditions at the Gold Coast beach break.

Wright, who won at Cabarita three weeks ago, was in the first heat of the day and looked assured of joining Macy Callaghan in the quarter-finals, with the top two surfers advancing.

However with 15 seconds left in the heat Sophie McCulloch pulled into a closeout barrel and while it only lasted momentarily, it earned her a score of 1.73 which put her past Wright.

Callaghan then took Tokyo Olympic hope Gilmore's scalp in the quarter-final in tricky conditions, with decent waves going missing.

She only posted two sub-par lefts but it was enough to oust seven-time world champion Gilmore, who barely registered a score.

In the men's event, another surfer selected for the Tokyo Olympics, Owen Wright, went the same way as his sister Tyler, falling to West Australian Jack Robinson in the quarter-finals.

Robinson is considered the next big name in surfing after his win in the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach in Hawaii last December to secure a spot on the Championship Tour.

The 22-year-old nailed the best score of the day with with a barrel and air combination that earned a 9.67.

Liam O'Brien beat local hope Chris Bennetts in the second quarter-final, with the remaining two held over until Wednesday.
