Almost a quarter of Australians received a parking fine over the past two years, new research claims - coming at a national cost of $1.2 billion.
A survey by comparison website finder of more than 1000 Australians found 24 per cent of drivers had received at least one parking infringement over the past two years.
West Australians were hit hardest by fines at $75 per driver over the two-year period, while NSW residents spent the least at $54 per driver.
The research also found that 28 per cent of Aussie men had breached parking laws, while only 21 per cent of women did the same.
Finder spokesman Taylor Blackburn warned parking fines could impact the credit score or insurance premium of drivers.
"Some parking infringements can also result in demerit points which can push up the price of your car insurance premium," Mr Blackburn said in a statement.
"While one ticket is unlikely to impact your insurance, a track record of parking fines will - especially if they're left unpaid."
Mr Blackburn recommended that drivers double check their surroundings and know state road rules to avoid irksome parking fines.
They should also obtain parking permits if available, particularly in inner-city suburbs.
