Aussie Sam Kerr among 10 nominees for FIFA's best women's player

Australia's Sam Kerr is in the running to be named the world's best women's player after being listed on the shortlist for this year's FIFA awards.

Kerr is on a 10-player list that includes United States captain, and last year's winner, Carli Lloyd.

The list will be whittled down to three players in late September with the winner to be announced on October 23 in London.

Kerr, who plays for Sky Blue FC in New Jersey, is the US National Women's Soccer League's all-time leading scorer and her star has been growing on the international stage.

This year's Tournament Of Nations was something of a coming-out party for the 23-year-old as the Matildas beat the USWNT for the first time ever, followed by comprehensive wins over Japan and finally Brazil.

The Australian side finished with an 11-3 goal differential, with Kerr contributing four goals, including a hat-trick in the 4-2 victory over Japan.

The athletic goal-scorer has risen rapidly since making her Matildas debut as a 15-year-old in 2009.

She will be huge part of the Matildas' charge at the Asian Cup in 2018.

The tournament will be held in Jordan next April, with the Matildas hoping to avenge an agonising 1-0 loss to Japan in the 2014 final.

First though, we will see her in action in two matches against Brazil in Penrith and Newcastle next month.
