Australian sailor Matt Wearn has bolstered his bid for gold at the Tokyo Olympics, climbing into second spot overall in the one-man Laser class.
Wearn, ranked 17th after a frustrating start on Sunday, moved up the leaderboard on a productive Tuesday of racing in Fujisawa.
The medal contender, who edged reigning Olympic champion Tom Burton to represent Australia in the event at these Games, finished fourth in Tuesday's opening race then banked two second-place finishes.
Wearn currently has 27 net points.
Cypriot Pavlos Kontides (18 net points) won two races on Tuesday, leaving him the only sailor ranked above the West Australian.
The sailors will compete in four more regular heats before Sunday's double-point medal race.
Meanwhile, delays caused by light and shifty winds in Enoshima meant two of Tuesday's male skiff 49er races were postponed.
Victorian brothers Sam and Will Phillips, teaming up in the 49er, are seventh after their opening heat.
Jake Lilley, who on Tuesday started his Finn competition with two races in Kamakura, is eighth overall.
Mara Stransky is 18th after six of her Laser Radial races, while Australia's 49er FX team of Tess Lloyd and Jaime Ryan occupies 11th spot after three races.
Wednesday's action is headlined by Rio 2016 silver medallists Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan, who have their opening 470 races in Enoshima.
