Aussie Garfoot wins bronze at world road cycling championships

Australia's Katrin Garfoot has added another world road cycling championships medal to her collection after finishing third in the women's individual time trial in Bergen, Norway.

Garfoot, who claimed bronze in the same event last year, clocked a time of 29:09.28, just under 19 seconds shy of Dutch victor Annemiek van Vleuten, who completed the wet and slippery 21.1-kilometre course in 28:50.35.

Olympic road race champion Anna van der Breggen was second, 12.16 behind her fellow Dutchwoman van Vleuten.

It was an emotional win for van Vleuten, who sustained three spinal fractures in an accident in the road race in Rio last year.

"I can't believe it," van Vleuten said. "To be world champion in the TT, I never thought it would be, but this year I've started to believe.

"The downs make the ups more beautiful, makes it really special."

Garfoot will contest the women's road race this weekend.
