Aussie Daniels has season-high points in Hawks win

Australia's Dyson Daniels has scored his most points in any NBA game this season to help Atlanta to a nailbiting 113-110 defeat of Charlotte.

Daniels came agonisingly close to his third double-double of the campaign with 22 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals on Monday (AEDT).

Among his best moments, the 22-year-old guard stole the ball from Moussa Diabate late in the first half to help the Hawks charge up the court, where he tipped in Onyeka Okongwu's lay-up.

Daniels has now produced at least one steal in 70 consecutive games, a streak that dates back to last December.

Jalen Johnson (28 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds) commanded plenty of attention from the Charlotte defence, which made Daniels a popular attacking option in Atlanta.

"Dyson, in the strong corner or kind of on the edge there, not deep under the basket, that allowed him to play off of other people," said Hawks coach Quin Snyder.

"I thought he made really good decisions."

Daniels bounded into the paint for a mid-range floater that gave the hosts what was then a game-high eight-point lead in the fourth quarter, and equalled his season-best tally of 18 points.

The depleted Hornets threatened to nab a fifth win of the season on a 14-2 run during the final period, but the Hawks held on after a big defensive play from Nickeil Alexander-Walker (23 points) with 11 seconds remaining.

With Atlanta up by two points, he stripped Kon Knueppel (28 points) on a drive to the basket and was immediately fouled.

He marched down the other end to hit one of two free throws and extend Charlotte's losing streak to six games.

Elsewhere, James Harden could not replicate his heroics from the Los Angeles Clippers' last start, missing all eight of his three-point attempts in a 120-105 loss to Cleveland.

An 11-time All Star, Harden had a franchise-record 55 points against the Hornets on the weekend but it was the Cavaliers' Donovan Mitchell who stood tallest in Cleveland with 37 points and eight rebounds.

Harden had 19 points as the Clippers slipped to a 5-12 record.

The Portland Trail Blazers, the only team to have defeated Oklahoma City this season, fell convincingly in the rematch as reigning Shai Gilgeous-Alexander inspired a 122-95 win for the defending champions.

Gilgeous-Alexander put up 37 points to go with seven assists, with the Thunder leading for all but one minute 31 seconds and improving their record to 17-1.

And LeBron James came up with 17 points in his first road game of the season but Luka Doncic (33 points, 11 rebounds) was the star as the Los Angeles Lakers edged the Utah Jazz out, 108-106.
