Aurangabad farmers call off stir after power utility’s assurance

AURANGABAD: A group of farmers from Khuldabad and Gangapur among other areas — following assurance of corrective measures given by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) on Monday — cancelled their scheduled agitation aimed at highlighting the issue of unrepaired burnt transformers in rural areas.

Led by BJP MLA from Gangapur Prashant Bamb, the farmers were supposed to gather at the MSEDCL office in Chikalthana area from where they were planning to collect new transformers and get them installed at their own expense.

Earlier on Sunday, Bamb had written a letter to the state power utility officials highlighting the alleged inordinate delay in repair and replacement of damaged transformers.

“Despite waiting for a considerable time, the MSEDCL officials are not ready to replace the damaged transformers. The official apathy has posed survival issues before the farmers as they cannot irrigate their crops due to the absence of power supply in the fields,” he said.

Citing official response from the state power authority, the MLA said around 15 damaged transformers would be replaced on Monday itself followed by another 15 on March 1 and remaining in the next subsequent 24-hours.

When contacted, Pravin Daroli, MSEDCL superintendent engineer for Aurangabad rural circle, said the ground staff of the state power utility were engaged in repair of damaged transformers.
