Auntie Anne's reveals plans to open pretzel shop on Cardiff's Caroline Street

A new pretzel shop is set to open on one of Cardiff city centre's most popular streets.

Proposals for a branch of Auntie Anne's opening on Caroline Street have been submitted to Cardiff council.

The new store, which will also sell pizza, hot dogs, gelato and a variety of soft drinks, will move into the site formerly occupied by Zee Grill takeaway.

An application to display new signage for the new shop at 29 Caroline Street has been submitted to the council, with the applicant, Freshley Baked Ltd, applying for this to be displayed for five years from December 1 this year.

Auntie Anne's will join a host of new food establishments on the famous street, such as Thai restaurant Busaba, Indian Express and Master Falafel. You can read our reviews of them here.

There is already a branch of Auntie Anne's in Cardiff, in St David's Shopping Centre. On Caroline Street, it will also join bigger chains, such as Five Guys and Greggs.

Founded in 1988 in the USA, Auntie Anne’s has grown from humble beginnings in a farmers market to a multinational brand with over 1,200 stores in 24 countries.

The chain's menu offers a variety of soft pretzels, from the original snack made with just five ingredients, to sweet options such as cinnamon sugar and raisin, to pretzels loaded with jalapenos and pepperoni.

Customers can also purchase 'pretzel nuggets' in three different flavours, as well as hot dogs wrapped in pretzel dough and topped with cheese and jalapenos.

The application comes after plans were revealed for a handful of new venues on neighbouring St Mary Street.

Bar chain Flight Club has applied for planning permission from the council to open a new venue in the capital, after enjoying success in London, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol and Birmingham.

The bar's unique concept sees the classic pub game given a "supercharged" modern makeover and combined with food and free-flowing cocktails, with customers promised a "spectacular bar, electric atmosphere and mind-blowing experience".

Meanwhile, Wales captain Gareth Bale's 'Wales. Golf. Madrid' mantra is set to become a reality after the footballer announced plans to open a golf-themed bar on the street.

The Wales and Real Madrid star is the partner in Par 59, a new bar, restaurant and mini-golf venue which is set to take over the huge 23,000 square feet site of the former Liquid/Life nightclub in spring 2022.

Late-night gaming bar NQ64 also opened its first Welsh venue in Cardiff earlier this week, having already launched bars in Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and Edinburgh.

Taking over the site of the former Brass Bat Bar, the underground arcade bar offers classic arcade games operated by tokens, alongside free-to-play classic consoles including N64, original PlayStations, Game Cube and Super Nintendo.
