Augsburg boss banned from Bundesliga return after breaking quarantine to buy toothpaste

Augsburg boss Heiko Herrlich will be absent from his side's Bundesliga return on Saturday after he left the club's hotel quarantine to buy toothpaste and skin cream.

Herrlich - a former forward for Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund - was only appointed as Augsburg boss in March, but he is now not permitted to return to the quarantined group of players and staff until he has registered two negative coronavirus tests.

The German Football Association have ordered all teams to stay together in a close environment while being regularly tested to ensure that their attempts at restarting the league season go ahead smoothly.

Herrlich admitted his mistake to club officials after making the unscheduled exit from the hotel, and is now staying away from Saturday's game, which would have been his first in charge of the club.

"I made a mistake by leaving the hotel," said Herrlich in a statement released by the Augsburg website on Thursday evening.

"Even if I have followed all hygiene measures both when leaving the hotel and otherwise, I cannot undo this.

"In this situation, I was not able to act as a role model for my team and the public.

"I will therefore be consistent and stand by my mistake. Because of this misconduct, I will not be leading the training tomorrow and will not be in charge of the team against Wolfsburg on Saturday.”

All eyes will be on the Bundesliga at the weekend when it becomes the first major European league to return in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.

No fans will be in attendance for any matches, with Borussia Dortmund's derby clash with Schalke being seen as the highlight of the weekend.
