Audrey Hepburn's '70s bedroom was the pinnacle of coastal elegance 50 years before it was a trend – it proves the timelessness of wicker furniture, soft blues, and warm whites

From classic coastal chic to 2025 coastal grandmother, the seaside is a constant source of inspiration for breezy, effortlessly stylish interiors. Though the coastal look has been reinvented as a trend hundreds of times, its roots are in timeless decor principles that never date. For proof, look no further than Audrey Hepburn's Swiss bedroom.

Archival images of the master suite at La Paisible from 1971 are a masterclass in decorating a coastal bedroom. It features a bed upholstered in white and blue toile, surrounded by circular white wicker tables. White curtains and a blue carpet continue the pared-back color palette. A gold-framed portrait and a colorful painting add a touch of interest to the walls. Yellow flowers are the perfect stylistic addition.

Design expert Lena Gierasinska waxes on the timelessness of coastal decor. She states: 'The popularity of coastal-style interiors has endured for many years.'

Shop the coastal look

Though the coastal look is timeless, without a careful hand it can quickly fall into kitsch. Luckily, Audrey Hepburn's space provides a blueprint for how to tap into coastal decor so it looks chic and not clichéd.

First, start with a pared-back color scheme. Lena advises: 'To give a coastal-style space a sophisticated spin, forego nautical hues and focus on a refined palette of muted blues, seafoam greens, soft neutrals, sandy beiges, and crisp whites. A blue linen sofa anchors the space with a relaxed, yet elegant feel.'

Incorporating wicker furnishings is the next step to add interest. Lena states: 'Layer in luxurious natural textures—think linen drapes, a wool or sisal rug, and woven accents in rattan or cane.'

Texture is key to making this look work. Lena suggests: 'Opt for rustic ceramic vases with organic shapes, ensuring the look remains chic and timeless rather than overly themed.'

Looking to spaces that have looked stylish for 50 plus years is the perfect way to build a timeless interior. Audrey Hepburn's home in Switzerland is the perfect place to start.
