Audi driver ticketed for 'obnoxiously loud' exhaust and non-compliant number plate

An Audi driver was ticketed by police after being spotted driving around with an "obnoxiously loud" exhaust and a non-compliant number plate.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit pulled over a bright yellow Audi A1/S1 Sportback which had been driving around Ilkeston between September 23-24.

The force pulled the vehicle over in Chalons Way where it was discovered the exhaust system had no silencer and the number plates were non-compliant.

Derbyshire Roads Police said: "Chalons Way, Ilkeston. Obnoxiously loud exhaust with no silencer. Non-compliant number plate. Ticket."

Car modifications can include a back-box or 'silencer delete' to improve hot exhaust gas flow from the engine, resulting in more noise.

The Government says: "All exhaust silencers must be maintained in a good and efficient working order. You will be breaking the law if you remove a silencer or make any modification that would make that vehicle emit a noise louder than the original exhaust before it was modified."

Therefore, police officers can pull over a car which is too loud and such car modifications are discretionary.

While on most occasions sensibly modified cars would avoid police attention, the Audi in Ilkeston brought attention to itself as it was "obnoxiously loud", police say.

To be compliant, number plates must be visible and numbers or letters cannot be rearranged.

The current format, as of 2001, consists of two letters referring to the region where the vehicle was registered, two numbers where it was issued and three random letters.

Personalised number plates, purchased from the DVLA, are allowed but must not be altered.
