Audi driver caught drink-driving after doing U-turn in cloud of smoke

An Audi driver came to the attention of police when the vehicle did a U-turn with a cloud of smoke and debris surrounding the car, a court heard.

It was around 1.30am on April 4 when police saw the Audi being driven as sparks came off the wheels.

Father-of-three Benjamin Clarke "appeared surprised" at the damage caused to the tyres, Nottingham Magistrates' Court was told on Monday, April 19.

There was significant damage to the wheels, said Melissa Morton, prosecuting.

"There was almost no tyre and it was completely on its rim".

Clarke, 31, of Shelley Street, Worksop, failed a roadside breath test. An evidential test showed he had 86 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, over the limit of 35.

After pleading guilty to drink-driving in Lowdham Road, Lowdham, he was fined £450, ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £45. He was banned from driving and offered a drink drive rehabilitation course to reduce his ban.

Representing himself, Clarke said: "I 100 percent do not agree with drink-driving".

He had been at a friend's house to meet his new partner.

Whilst he was there, the new partner received a message from her ex-partner who knew people were in the house and was not happy about it. She received another message to say he was coming to the house.

Clarke was asked to leave and felt he had no choice and told magistrates "it was fight-or-flight mode."
