Why Auburn Will Win
The Auburn defense continues to be fantastic.
The team was able to get to this point with just the one blemish. The hope was to survive and be okay as true freshman Bo Nix got his feet wet. He’s getting better, the offense is getting stronger – even though it’s a running-back-by-committee approach with JaTarvious Whitlow out – and the NFL defensive front has been every bit as good as hoped for.
The Tigers lead all SEC teams in third down conversions, the pass rush is terrific, the plays behind the line are there on a regular basis, and they have the talent and ability to get to Joe Burrow and bother him a bit.
Can Nix take advantage of a shockingly shaky LSU secondary? To be fair, everyone is bringing out the passing game to try keeping up, but it really is possible to throw against this D.
Nix might have had a clunker against the Florida defense, but he has completed 70% of his throws or more in three of the last five games, is hitting his downfield passes, and he’s getting time behind a line that’s putting together a fantastic season. But …

Why LSU Will Win
Nix has played against two great teams. He threw two picks against Oregon, three against Florida, and failed to hit 42% of his passes in both games.
The Auburn defense might be fantastic overall, but it’s possible to throw on the secondary. The Tigers allowed two touchdown passes and didn’t pick off a pass in four straight games before hitting the Arkansas layup, and now they get to deal with the Joe Burrow experience.
It’s not just that Burrow is hitting over 79% of his passes, it’s that he’s hitting over 79% of his passes with downfield bombs, averaging well over 11 yards per attempt.
How good is he in this offense? The 42-6 win over Utah State was the only time he averaged fewer than ten yards per throw and competed fewer than 72% of his throws.
The O is getting all of the love, but the D – even with the very-good-but-not-tremendous season from the secondary – really is fantastic. The run defense is holding firm, the linebacking corps is getting all over the field, and the group is doing its part to hold serve.
Auburn is very good offensively, but it doesn’t have the pop to keep up with what Burrow and company are doing.

What’s Going To Happen
Grind, grind, grind. That’s what Auburn is going to do.
Oregon didn’t open it up against Auburn, and it left the door open just a crack. LSU isn’t going to be afraid to push it deep, but it won’t have the ball quite enough to get into its normal groove.
The LSU Tigers will have too much offense when they need it the most, but for the first time all year, they’re going to be stressed by a defense that will make Burrow press a bit.
LSU will get the win, but a bit like the Florida game a few weeks ago, it’ll have to keep pushing. This time, though, it will be a much lower-scoring fight.
