#5 Auburn

The Auburn Tigers broke a 34-year drought to win the Southeastern Conference Tournament this year, soundly besting SEC No. 2 Tennessee 84-64 in the final to mark their resurgence. The school has now made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since their first five entries into the competition (1984-88). They’ll open their competition against New Mexico State on Thursday and are hoping to at least match their 2018 run to the round of 32.

Auburn truly escaped against their first-round foe, #13 New Mexico State. The Aggies had a chance to win the game with under 2 seconds, but missed two out of three free throws and couldn’t sink the buzzer-beater.

#4 Kansas

Kansas boasts the longest ever streak of consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament and will feature in the round of 64 for the 30th season in a row when they took down No. 13 Northeastern on Thursday. Coach Bill Self has been in charge for the past 16 of those seasons (including 2018-19) and their 31-8 record saw the Jayhawks rack up at least 30 victories for the third season in succession.

Kansas finished third in the Big 12 conference but advanced to the tournament decider, where they fell 78-66 to Iowa State. Under Self, the team has reached at least the Elite Eight in each of the past three campaigns and hasn’t failed to make it past the first round since 2004-05.
