Aubameyang must break Arsenal's goalscoring trend after matching Van Persie and Giroud

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the winner against Norwich to give Arsenal their first Premier League win in what has been a disappointing start to the season.

It was also the Gunners’ first Premier League goal of the campaign but what was more significant about Aubameyang’s strike was that it made it his 50th goal at the Emirates Stadium since joining in 2018.

The club captain had been a revelation during the majority of his three-and-a-half-year spell at the club and was awarded the captaincy of the club after his excellent performances.

However, he has joined the 50 goal club at the Emirates Stadium that includes a list of names that are not so welcome at the North London ground.

There are only three other players that have scored 50 goals at the ground since its opening in 2006 - Robin Van Persie, Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott.

Arsenal fans will be hoping that Aubameyang doesn’t follow the route of his attacking predecessors Van Persie and Giroud.

Van Persie joined Manchester United in 2012 after failing to agree a new contract with the club and Giroud joined London rivals Chelsea in 2018 after Arsenal had signed Aubameyang.

However, Aubameyang’s love for the club certainly seems different especially when you take into consideration that he committed to the club by signing a new contract in 2020 despite interest from many other top suitors around world football.

He was in a similar situation to Van Persie as the Dutchman was the club captain at the time just like Aubameyang is now.

Even so, the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker had a better Arsenal squad and infrastructure behind him when departing the club as the Gunners were regularly playing Champions League football.

Whereas Aubameyang has been captaining the club but has yet to experience football at Europe's top table since signing for the club.

After winning the golden boot for the 2018/2019 season he was compared to the likes of Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero in debating who was the best striker in the league.

However, The Gabonese international’s form has dipped since signing the new deal in 2020 as he scored ten Premier League goals last season compared to the 22 during his golden boot achieving season and he is a ghost when the current best striker in the Premier League is being discussed.

Despite the recent dip form, he has still been crucial for the club and has already won pivotal points this season with the goalscoring winner against Norwich.

He has kept Arsenal above water many times in his three years at the club and is still the most important player ahead of this campaign.
