"Aubameyang killed us", Newcastle United dressing room verdict after Arsenal defeat

Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett says that Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang "killed" the Magpies with his stinging second half volley.

The Magpies had weathered the storm after a difficult first half but were still in the game and only 1-0 down, but the Gunners turned on the style when the ex-Borussia Dortmund ace fired home.

It proved to be too much for Dummett and co, and the 2-0 defeat leaves Newcastle in a lowly fourth bottom position, but the former Wales international feels that his side can secure safety before the final day showdown against Fulham.

Dummett said: "When they got the second it was a bit of a sucker-punch and it killed us.

"We came out and pressed them high in the second half to try to get a goal.

"Anything can happen.

"There are four massive games to go.

"The sooner we get the points the better.

"We have been in good form lately."

However, United will need to dig deeper than they did against the Gunners if they are to finish the season with a bit of credit.

Dummett, speaking to Match of the Day, said: "They were a good team despite the league position.

"They got in the holes and caused us problems. They were the better team today and fully deserved the three points.

"With the amount of games they have coming up we knew they would make changes but they have a quality squad and they showed that in the game."
