Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena was released by authorities in Mexico and his attorney said no charges will be filed after a custody dispute over his 2-year-old daughter, according to a newspaper in the Yucatan.
Attorney Carlos Chable told Por Esto! that a judge determined there was not enough evidence to pursue charges against the breakout star of the 2020 postseason.
Arozarena's agent told the Tampa Bay Times on Tuesday that the player had been arrested following a dispute involving the child's care. Two other newspapers in Mexico had previously reported the 25-year-old from Cuba was arrested for abducting the girl and fighting with the child's mother and grandfather.
"The only thing I know is he was hyper-sensitive about making sure that the child's needs were being taken care of," agent Abel Guerra said earlier in the week. "He was always sending money down there, and he was very involved in her life."
The Yucatan Times reported Thursday that the child's mother had filed a domestic violence complaint against Arozarena in 2018 but the local prosecutor did not pursue the case.
The Rays released a statement earlier in the week saying they were gathering more information on the situation and would have no further comment. Even if charges are not filed, Arozarena still could face punishment from Major League Baseball if it is determined he violated the league's domestic violence policies.
