Attorney-General to appeal manslaughter sentence for mother of Mason Jet Lee

Mason Jet Lee was found dead by paramedics in 2016.

Queensland Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath is set to launch an appeal against the sentence handed to Anne Maree Lee, who last month pleaded guilty to manslaughter over the death of her 21-month-old son, Mason.

Lee, 29, will be eligible for parole in July, despite the nine-year sentence for manslaughter and child cruelty.

The Attorney-General declined to comment on the case in detail, but her spokeswoman said the decision comes after her office sought expert legal advice.

"Ms D'Ath requested the appeal after receiving legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions," the spokeswoman said.

Last month, Lee was sentenced to a non-parole period of three years, but by that time had already served about two-and-a-half years behind bars.

She also admitted to cruelty charges for neglecting injuries to the 21-month-old's leg and anus in the months before his death.

The toddler — who was known to both Queensland Health and the Department of Child Safety — died in June 2016, days after being punched in the abdomen by his stepfather, William Andrew O'Sullivan.

The toddler suffered horrific injuries including bruising to his head, chest and abdomen as well as a broken tailbone and was left alone in a room at his Caboolture home, north of Brisbane, where he died.

Ms D'Ath lodged an appeal against O'Sullivan's sentence in September, after he was given a non-parole period of four years.

That appeal is still proceeding through the courts.

Mason's death sparked several government reviews, including the Queensland Family and Child Commission report, which criticised organisational culture within departments and recommended their systems be overhauled.

Earlier this month, the Coroners Court ordered a public inquest into the boy's death but is yet to set a date for the hearings.
