Attendance at Dumfries and Galloway emergency departments proving "incredibly demanding" for staff

The number of people attending accident and emergency departments is proving “incredibly demanding” for healthcare staff.

And they are asking people to think hard about whether their issue really is an emergency before heading to hospital.

In a video for NHS Dumfries and Galloway, emergency department consultant Dr Pete Armstrong said: “We’re extremely busy at the very best of times, but recently it’s been incredibly demanding treating a very large number of patients.

“If you’re thinking of coming to the emergency department and haven’t spoken to anyone before attending, we want you to ask yourself one question – is it an emergency?

“What do we mean by an emergency? It’s something that’s potentially life-threatening – an accident, an injury or an illness that is a threat to your life and requires immediate attention such as a heart attack, stroke, a collapse or a badly broken bone.”

Anyone who is any doubt about whether their problem is an emergency is asked to phone their GP, pharmacist or NHS 24 on 11.

They will then receive expert advice or be pointed in the direction of district nurses, out of hours GPs or dentists or mental health services.

Pharmacists will be able to perform some health checks and treat common illnesses such as sore throats and ear aches, or refer them elsewhere if needed.

And if it is the best route, a person will be directed to the emergency department or minor injury service.

Dr Armstrong added: “Coming straight here with something that is not a life-threatening emergency means you may have a very long wait only to be advised that this is not the place for you to receive treatment and to be directed elsewhere.

“Help us give the best of care to those who really need it and ask yourself this one question – is it an emergency?”
