Attempted murder suspect cleared of any wrongdoing over 'stabbing'

A man charged with attempted murder after an alleged stabbing in Waterloo has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Michael Lewry, 23, was arrested after an alleged knife attack in which Kevin Hartley, 39, was said to have suffered a serious stab wound.

Police said Mr Hartley, then 38, sustained the injury inside a flat in South Road on the evening of December 26, 2020.

Merseyside Police said Mr Lewry, then 22, of Abbott Drive, Bootle, was later arrested and charged with attempted murder over the Boxing Day incident.

However, that charge was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service, ahead of a five-day trial at Liverpool Crown Court last month.

Mr Lewry instead stood trial charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and the alternative lesser offence of wounding.

He denied both charges.

Mr Lewry told a jury he was attacked by Mr Hartley and had acted in self-defence, during which Mr Hartley had impaled himself on a knife.

A jury found Mr Lewry not guilty of both offences, following four hours and 38 minutes of deliberation.
