A man who was shot by police after allegedly stabbing an officer in the neck has been charged with attempted murder.
The 27-year-old faces a string of serious charges after an incident in Adelaide's northern suburbs on Wednesday that followed reports of a man with a knife running onto a major road.
On Thursday, Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said the community expected violent offenders to be held accountable and that "the consequences imposed reflect the gravity of the offending".
During a confrontation, a female police officer sustained a serious wound to her neck and the Woodville Gardens man was shot in the leg by another officer.
Police said the man had not yet been medically cleared and investigators had not yet formally interviewed him.
The man has been charged with offences including attempted murder, aggravated assault, and assault on a prescribed emergency worker (nurse).
He remains in the intensive care unit at Royal Adelaide Hospital but his injuries are considered non-life threatening.
The injured officer also remains in hospital and is being monitored for serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.
"The most recent advice regarding her condition indicates she will remain in hospital for several more days as she continues her recovery," police said in a statement on Thursday.
Mr Stevens said incidents involving serious violence against police officers "can have profound and lasting consequences, whether through significant physical injuries or the psychological trauma that often accompanies such events".
"The impact extends beyond the individual officer to their families, colleagues and the broader policing community," he said.
"When police officers are subjected to acts of serious violence in the course of their duties, the community rightly expects offenders to be held accountable.
"It is important that the consequences imposed reflect the gravity of the offending and the significant harm caused to those who dedicate themselves to protecting the community."
