Attempted murder arrest after woman knifed in neck and stomach

A street has been cordoned off after a woman was knifed in the neck and stomach in what police are treating as attempted murder.

Forensics and police remain in Southport after the victim, a woman in her 40s, suffered knife wounds to her abdomen and neck in the stabbing at around 9.30am on Friday.

Merseyside Police said a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at the scene in Virginia Street, which remained taped off this afternoon.

The victim has been taken to hospital for treatment but the severity of her injuries is not known at this stage.

Neighbours said they first realised something had happened when they heard “a lot of noise and lights” as police arrived with residents saying up to six police cars turned up in the street this morning.

Officers have since been knocking at residents' houses as part of their investigation and police are encouraging people with information to come forward.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We can confirm officers are currently at a house in Virginia Street in Southport.

"Emergency services were contacted at just after 9.30am today, Friday, June 25, following reports a woman in her 40s had been assaulted and suffered knife wounds to her neck and abdomen.

"The woman has been taken to hospital for treatment for her injuries. A 50-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder."

Police say enquiries into the incident are ongoing and house-to-house and forensic enquiries are being carried out.

Scientific support officers were called to the scene and seemed to be focusing their attention on an alleyway between houses.

Detective Inspector Paul Gillies said: “The investigation is still in the early stages and we are working to establish what has taken place. We are not at the moment looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

“I would ask anyone who has any information which could assist our investigation to DM @MerPolCC, call 101 or contact @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting log 234 of 25th June.”
