Attempted abduction of woman at Canberra bus stop

A man allegedly tried to abduct a 24-year-old woman from a bus stop in Canberra's south this morning, with police calling for witnesses.

The woman was waiting at a bus stop on Knoke Avenue in Gordon about 9:30am when a small white car pulled up and the male driver got out, police said.

Without speaking, he allegedly grabbed the woman by the wrists and tried to pull her into the car.

Officers said the woman managed to fight him off and the man got back in the car and drove off towards Woodcock Drive.

He was described as Caucasian, between 30 and 40 years old, about 165 centimetres tall and with a slim build.

He was wearing a hat or a beanie, a light-coloured T-shirt, jeans and sneakers.

It is unclear whether the woman knew the offender and whether it was a random attack.

Police are reminding Canberrans who feel unsafe to call triple-0 in an emergency.

Anyone with information on the attempted abduction has been urged to contact ACT Policing on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
