Attempted abduction claims at East Kilbride nightclub were a sick hoax

A woman has admitted making up a claim that she and another female were the victims of an attempted abduction outside an East Kilbride nightclub.

Police were told that two men tried to force Sherise Robertson and another woman into a car in the early hours.

The men, said to be a Russian and an Egyptian, were arrested, but cleared after officers concluded that the women were not telling the truth.

Robertson, 28, of Cypress Court, East Kilbride, has now admitted wasting police time by making a false statement on March 4 last year.

She submitted a guilty plea by letter at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

Emma McGinley, prosecuting, said Robertson and the other woman described how they met the men at Downtown nightclub.

Later, the women claimed, they were in a car park when a black vehicle with blacked-out windows pulled up.

Ms McGinley told the court: "It was reported that two men got out of a rear passenger door, grabbed Robertson's friend and tried to force her into the vehicle.

"Robertson was then said to have grabbed the other woman, pulled her away and kicked one of the men on the shin. Both women said they were screaming for the men to leave them alone.

"One man was then said to have picked Robertson's companion off the ground. She was screaming loudly and was dropped suddenly to the ground.

"The women said they ran screaming from the car park."

Ms McGinley said the women gave statements to the police about the alleged abduction bid.

Officers reviewed CCTV from the nightclub, identified two men from descriptions provided and arrested them.

The fiscal added: "Later it became clear that Robertson had not provided a truthful version of events.

"There were inconsistencies in her statement.

"It was put to her that she had been lying. She became very upset and claimed the other woman had told her to make a report to the police.

"She said she had gone to the nightclub with the other woman.

"The two males were there but nothing untoward had taken place."

Sheriff Linda Nicolson deferred sentence until August 18 and ordered Robertson to appear personally then.
