Attacker tried to rape woman in her 60s after pushing her to the ground

A woman was grabbed, threatened and pushed to the ground before a man tried to rape her.

The victim was walking on Everton Road shortly before 5am on Sunday, November 24, when she was approached by the attacker.

It is believed that the man threatened the woman in her 60s, pushed her down and tried to rape her, close to the health centre, before she managed to activate a panic alarm.

After hearing the alarm, a passing taxi driver managed to pull over close to the attack, interrupting the man and forcing him to run off.

The ECHO understands that the driver stayed with the victim and a Merseyside Police appeal to find him led them to arrest a man on suspicion of attempted rape .

A spokesperson for the force said that a 29-year-old man from Everton was arrested on Saturday, November 30.

In a statement, police said: "We can confirm that a man was arrested and remains in custody on suspicion of attempted rape, following an incident last weekend in the Everton area.

"At around 4.40am on Sunday, 24 November, a woman in her 60s was grabbed and threatened on Everton Road in the direction of Brunswick Road.

"She was pushed and fell to the floor before activating a panic alarm. A passing taxi driver interrupted the offender and he ran off.

"Following extensive enquiries, including an appeal to identify the taxi driver who came to the victim’s aid, a 29-year-old man from Everton was arrested yesterday (Saturday 30 November) on suspicion of attempted rape and remains in custody for questioning."

The incident is not being linked to the rape of a young woman in Liverpool city centre , almost exactly a week later.

Police confirmed on Sunday, December 1, that a woman in her 20s had been on Great Homer Street and raped shortly before 4am.

The victim was left distressed and officers are now looking for a man, described as white, 5ft 8in tall and in his early 20s.

He was reportedly wearing a dark puffa-style microlight jacket with a hood.

Detective Inspector Ben Dyer said: “We’re carrying out extensive enquiries into this shocking attack, and our specially trained officers will be fully supporting the victim following her extremely traumatic experience.

“The incident took place near to student residences, and we have been visiting and dropping letters in to all those who live nearby.

"I want to assure the community that we are gathering information and will be providing a presence in the area.

“Did you hear anything or have heard talk since? I want to appeal to anyone with information, saw the incident, or a man matching the description in the area or running off at around 3.40am to come forward.

“Any small detail could be vital to the investigation, from CCTV, dashcam, or other footage or detail, so let us judge what you know and we will take appropriate action.”
