Attacker sprayed 'unknown substance' in man's eye in Newcastle City Centre assault

A search is ongoing for a man who made threats and sprayed an unknown substance at a man in Newcastle.

Northumbria Police officers investigating the assault in the City Centre are now appealing to the public for information.

Shortly after 3.40am on September 20, a 21-year-old man and a friend were walking by St Nicholas Cathedral on St Nicholas Street.

The male suspect then approached them threatening them and demanding money before spraying the 21-year-old man with an unknown substance causing injuries to his eye.

As part of their investigation, officers are now appealing to the public for witnesses and anyone with information that could assist with their investigation.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Several proactive enquiries to locate those responsible are ongoing but anyone with information, is encouraged to contact us via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page on our website or by calling 101 and quoting reference NP-20210920-0103.

"Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
