But the Spaniard endured a disappointing end to the day despite beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first of Friday's singles matches.
The 33-year-old needed Daniil Medvedev to beat Alexander Zverev to qualify for the semi-finals but the German prevailed in straight sets against the fourth seed Medvedev.
