AYUTTHAYA: More than 2 million baht in cash was stolen from two ATM machines that were cut open by the thieves in Wang Noi district late on Thursday night.
A burned-out, covered pickup truck believed used in the theft and several empty cash boxes were found about 5 kilometres away by a police patrol around 5am on Friday.
The vehicle had no licence plates and was abandoned and set on fire on a local road leading to the Ayodhya Links golf course near an irrigation canal in tambon Wang Sai, Wang Noi district, Pol Col Ekkarat Ouncharoen, chief of Wang Noi, said.
A search found several empty ATM cash boxes dumped behind nearby roadside bushes.
About 2.3 million baht cash was missing from the two ATMs, one belonging to Bangkok Bank and the other to Siam Commercial Bank, on Phanol Yothin Road in Wang Noi.
Police were checking the ownership of the vehicle and said the thieves probably torched it to destroy evidence.
Pol Col Kritsana Pattanacharoen, deputy spokesman to the Royal Thai Police Office, said on Friday the burned-out vehicle was thought to have been used in other ATM thefts in Wang Noi district and nearby areas.
Recordings from security cameras along the escape routes were being examined, he said.
